NZ’s waste laws are out of date—so we have made our submission on behalf of the outdoor community to let the government know just that.
Just like the first shaped skis—great when they started but now need a really good tune up. The central government is proposing some updates to the Waste Act. These changes would help us to catch up with other countries who are doing much better at preventing and reducing waste. There’s three main things to be discussed:
1. Extending producer responsibility — The company who makes your jackets etc would have greater responsibility for it over it’s lifespan. If the jacket rips the producer would be more responsible for costs if it couldn’t be repaired or needed to go to landfill.
2. Spending the Waste Disposal Levy wisely on waste reduction — Things like compost collection, repairing and reusing, so that less ends up going to landfill, should be prioritised.
3. Waste to energy incineration — The system doesn’t actually make much energy, causes a lot of air and climate pollution, and encourages consumption, so it’s a no from us.
