The New Zealand Ministry for Environment is looking for feedback on their recent amendment to the Second Emissions Reduction Plan. This is your chance to ask for systemic change, and protect the places and experiences you love. The more feedback the council gets, the more likely they are to implement a strong plan.

Some of the key points our submission makes include:
Partnering with Māori/iwi – Māori landowners are key to emissions reductions. Policies should uphold rangatiratanga and mana motuhake, provide resources, and ensure Māori are actively involved in decision-making and adoption of new technologies.
Tech reliance comes with risks – The revised approach depends heavily on new agricultural mitigation tools. If these technologies take longer to develop or scale, emissions reductions could be delayed, and New Zealand risks falling behind climate targets.
Support and equity for farmers – Fast-tracking approval for mitigation tools, providing education, and ensuring smaller or remote farms can access technology is essential for a fair transition across the sector.
Global trade matters – Other major trading partners, like the EU, have strict import standards. Slow progress on reducing agricultural emissions could hurt market access and the economy.
Agriculture drives the problem – Over 50% of NZ’s emissions come from agriculture and not taking serious action to mitigate these emissions indicates that the country is not taking climate action seriously.
